CO2 for the PalmControl

The PalmControl requires 60psi regulated compressed air from either an air compressor or a CO2 cylinder. The CO2 regulator pictured is available from HandGravers.com.  This regulator will work with several different sized cartridges and cylinders. The cartridge pictured on the regulator is a 25 gram cartridge.


Without an adapter, the regulator accepts 88 gram CO2 cartridges (available from WalMart and paintball stores at approximately $5 each) This cartridge will provide about 1.5 hours of engraving time. Link to 88 gram cartridges

With the 25g adapter, the regulator will accept 25 gram CO2 cartridges (available from bicycle shops). Approximately $6 each, and yielding around 20 minutes of engraving time.   Link to a 25 gram cartridge

With the 567g adapter, the regulator will accept the larger paintball CO2 cylinders like the 20 ounce, 567gram cylinder, which will provide around 8 to 10 hours of engraving time. These are refillable at a local paintball store for $3 to $4.   Link to a 567gram cylinder


When shopping for the 88gram and 25gram cartridges, look for the threaded neck version. They also make non-threaded ones, and these will not work with the regulator.

The threaded neck CO2 cartridges can be shipped by ground (with a special license by the shipper), but not by air. The 567gram (20oz) cylinders cannot be shipped full, but must be purchased on-line empty, and taken to the local paintball store for charging. Another option is to buy the cylinders iat a local paintball store.

Installing the CO2 adapters

CAUTION: CO2 in these bottles is a liquid. The bottle and the regulator must be an upright position during use. If the bottle is used on the side or upside-down, the CO2 liquid will come out in the form of dry ice and can foul the regulator. Especially for the large 567 gram (20oz) bottle, be sure to secure the regulator or cylinder in a vertical position in a place where it is out of the way, to prevent it from being hit or knocked over.

To use the 25 gram adapter, follow these steps:

1.      Before threading a cartridge in, be sure the regulator adjustment is set to off. Turn it counterclockwise until the word "off" is facing the front of the regulator.

2.      Thread the cartridge into the bottom of the regulator. The adapter does not need to be tight. In fact, don't screw it all the way in, or it will make it harder to get out later.

3.      Now thread a 25 gram cartridge into the adapter. In the regulator, there is a protruding pin that will pierce the ned of the cartridge. Resistance will be felt when the cartridge contacts the pin. Use some muscle, and continue threading the cartridge in. The pin will puncture the end of the cartridge, and allow the CO2 to flow to the regulator. 

4.      After the cartridge is in place, attach the PalmControl handpiece tubing to the out-port quick disconnect on the side of the regulator.

5.      Finally, turn the regulator adjustment to the desired PSI, and the PalmControl AirGraver is ready for use.

To use the 567 gram (20oz) adapter, follow these steps:
For safety, and to keep from loosing any CO2 from the cylinder, follow these assembly instructions closely. Please read through all these directions before assembling or disassembling.

1. Before threading the bottle on the adapter, be sure the regulator adjustment is off. Turn it counterclockwise until the word "off" is facing the front of the regulator.

2. Thread the adapter into the regulator, and use a 5/8 open end wrench or crescent wrench to tighten it snug into the regulator.

3.  Now, thread the other end of the adapter onto the cylinder by hand. until definite resistance is felt. When the pin in the adapter depresses the pin on the bottle, the CO2 is released. When resistance is felt, the CO2 in the cylinder is pushing up on the adaptert. Once you are past this initial resistance, the CO2 is released to the regulator and is ready for use.

4. After the cylinder is in place, attach the PalmControl handpiece tubing to the out port quick disconnect on the side of the regulator.

5.  Turn the regulator adjustment to the desired PSI, and the tool is ready for use.

If you want to remove the regulator from the 20oz bottle before the bottle is empty, simply reverse the assembly procedure. You will probably need to use a wrench on the adapter to overcome the resistance of the gas pushing up on it. CAUTION... DO NOT grab the regulator with your hand and simply start unscrewing it. Doing this will cause the regulator to unscrew from the adapter (rather than the adapter from the bottle), and the CO2 will squirt out rapidly, causing the loss of the remaining gas.  There is a small relief hole in the side of the regulator that the CO2 will bleed from if this should happen,. so no harm will be done, although it is rather noisy and you'll have an empty bottle.

So again, to remove a cylinder from the regulator, use a 5/8" wrench on the adapter and unscrew it from the cylinder.

!!WARNING: Improper use, filling, storage, or disposal of CO2 cylinders can result in death, personal injury or property damage.

         Do not alter CO2 cylinders in any way

         Do not overfill. Do no expose pressurized cylinder to temperature in excess of 130F

         Cylinders exposed to a fire or heated temperatures in excess of 350F should be condemned and/or hydrostatically tested prior to filling

         Valves must be installed or removed only by trained personnel.

         Do not use caustic cleaners.

         Keep cylinders out of the reach of children.
